Algebra Problem Again..Help?
Anthony leaves his ouse on his bike traveling at 18 mph. Thirty minutes later, his brother chandler takes after him at 24 mph. How long will it take chandler to catch upto Anthony?
Mathematics - 2 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
rate times time equal distance, and they travel the same distance. Let t=Anthony's time in hours. Let t-.5 = Chandler's time in hours. 18t = 24(t-.5) 18t = 24t - 12 12 = 6t t = 2 hours
Answer 2 :
Hours Chandler catches up (x): 18(x + 1/2) = 24x 18x + 9 = 24x 6x = 9 x = 9/6 or 3/2 or 1 1/2 Answer: 1 1/2 hours Chandler catches up with Anthony. Proof (equal distance traveled): 18 mph(1 1/2 + 1/2 hrs) = 24 mph(1 1/2 hrs) 18 mph(3/2 + 1/2 hrs) = 24 mph(3/2 hrs) 18 mph(4/2 hrs) = 36 mi 18 mph(2 hrs) = 36 mi 36 mi = 36 mi

About Momentum & Work problems: A 1 kg gun fires a 20 gram bullet that travels at 100 m/s

Momentum & Work problems: A 1 kg gun fires a 20 gram bullet that travels at 100 m/s...?
A 1 kg gun fires a 20 gram bullet that travels at 100 m/s. What will be the speed of recoil imparted to the gun, assuming that momentum is conserved perfectly (no heat generation)? A. 2 m/s B. 0.2 m/s C. 1.75 m/s D. 2.25 m/s E. None of the Above How much impulse did the gun mentioned above experience? A. 4 kg m/s B. 2 kg m/s C. 3 kg m/s D. 12 kg m/s E. None of the Above In a perfectly elastic collision, a 1 kg ball travelling at 2 m/s hits a 1 kg ball travelling at 1 m/s in the same direction. What is the total kinetic energy of this system? A. 0 kg m^2/s^2 B. 2.5 kg m^2/s^2 C. 12 kg m^2/s^2 D. 20 kg m^2/s^2 E. None of the Above What is the total momentum of the above system? A. 3 kg m/s B. 0 kg m/s C. 1 kg m/s D. 12 kg m/s Joey and Chandler are both sitting on one end of an 8 meter seesaw. Monica, who weighs 2000 N, comes along and sits on the other end, balancing the seesaw. If Joey leaves, Monica has to move 2.4 m closer to Chandler to balance the seesaw again. How much does Joey weigh? A. 750 N B. 800 N C. 900 N D. 1200 N E. None of the Above //My initial answer here is D but I'm not quite confident. Another friend, Rachel, who weighs 600 N, comes along and sits with Chandler. Monica has to move back to balance the seesaw. How far away will Monica be from Rachel and Chandler? A. 3 m B. 3.2 m C. 3.5 m D. 3.7 m E. None of the Above Brief explanations will do. :) I get the concepts of the problems but I can't seem to find out how to manipulate figures. Many thanks!

Answer 1 :
1) By the law of momentum conservation:- =>m1u1+m2u2 = m1v1+m2v2 =>0 + 0 = 20 x 10^-3 x 100 + 1 x v2 =>v2 = -2 m/s [-ve just indicating the direction of gun recoil is opposite to the velocity of the bullet] =>A 2) By Impulse(I) = ∆P = m∆v = 1 x 2 = 2 kg-m/s =>B 3) KE(total) = 1/2m1u1^2 + 1/2m2u2^2 =>KE(t) = 1/2 x 1 x (2)^2 + 1/2 x 1 x (1)^2 =>KE(t) = 2.5 J =>B 4) P(total) = m1u1+m2u2 =>P(t) = 1 x 2 + 1 x 1 =>P(t) = 3 kg-m/s =>A 5)Let the weight of Chander is W1 Newton =>W1 x 4 = 2000 x (4-2.4) =>W1 = 800 Newton =>Joyes weight = 2000 - 800 = 1200 Newton =>D 6) Let Monika is now a meter from the center =>(800+600) x 4 = a x 2000 =>a = 2.8 m =>The distance of Monika from the two = 4 + 2.8 = 6.80 m =>E
Answer 2 :
1. Horizontal Momentum Conservation: m1v1 = m2v2 => 20/1000 * 100 = 1*v2 =>v2 = 2m/s is the recoil speed for the gun. Ans A 2.Impulse = Change in the momentum = Δp = p2-p1 = 2 kg m/s - 0 kg m/s = 2kg m/s. Ans B. 3. Here, both the particles have same mass, thus after the collision their speeds get interchanged. You can verify this from the formula. v1 = (m1-m2)u1+2m2u2/(m1+m2). v2 = (m2-m1)u2 + 2m1u1/(m1+m2). Thus the KE of the system = 1/2*m1*v1² + 1/2*m2*v2² = 1/2*1(v1²+v2²) = 0.5(2²+1²) = 2.5J. Ans B. 4. Total momentum = m1v1 + m2v2 = 1*2+1*1 = 3 kgm/s Ans A. 5. Let the force/weight of Joey and Chandler be J and C respectively. We've (J+C)4 = 2000*4 When Joey leaves, Monica moves 2.4m closer means the new distance is 1.6m 4C = 2000*1.6 =>C = 800 => J = 1200. Ans D You're correct. :) 6.Let the new distance be r for Monica from the axis of rotation. We've (600+800)*4 = 2000*r =>r = 1400*4/2000 = 2.8m Thus Monica is 6.8m(=4m + 2.8m) from Rachel and Chandler. Ans E Hope you get the solution.

Since the news media reported last month that the special scholarship's funding had run out for the 2008-09 school year, private donors in the Valley have stepped forward, ASU President Michael Crow said. ASU officials are working with a third-party group to provide scholarship money. Crow said he "can't guarantee," but it's his hope that enough money will be available to cover the estimated 200 to 300 students who have to pay higher, out-of-state tuition as a result of changes in state law. ASU officials are advising those students to go ahead and register for fall courses. advertisement "In the last few weeks, we've made tremendous progress with other parties outside the university to secure the resources," Crow said. "So there will be the resources necessary for these students to continue their education." A fund called the American Dream Fund Coalition has been set up and is being maintained by the non-profit group Chicanos Por La Causa. He estimates the cost at about $3 million a year, adding that the money will come from private sources and not state funding. For the past year, 207 undocumented immigrants who graduated from Arizona high schools have received private scholarship money through the ASU Foundation. The scholarships started after the voter-approved Proposition 300 took effect in late 2006, requiring illegal immigrants to pay out-of-state tuition at the state's universities and community colleges. Out-of-state tuition and fees are about $17,000 a year at ASU while the in-state amount is nearly $5,000. The law also prevents illegal immigrants from receiving state scholarships. When Crow announced the scholarships last year, he met with criticism from some state lawmakers who questioned whether the strategy complied with the law. ASU officials have maintained the scholarship is legal because they use private, not state, money. "We're just trying to be helpful to them because many of them are really great students," Crow said. Crow said the students, who ASU calls "special-class international students," are victims of the bad public policy of various countries, including the United States. Not all the students are from Mexico, he said. Some are from China and other countries, and they lack proof of citizenship or legal residency. "It turns out somehow they've ended up in the United States, and they have citizenship nowhere," he said. Private citizens have come forward with donations, he said, "and that's going to be how they are going to pay for their education going forward." State Rep. John Kavanagh, R-Fountain Hills, said he has no problem with private groups' fundraising, but ASU should steer clear of any involvement. "ASU can't work behind the scenes," he said. "They can't work upfront and dispense these (scholarships). They can't have any involvement."

Answer 1 :
Gee, a lot of American students are capable of working their way through school - why can't these people.
Answer 2 :
I am strongly against illegal immigration. First, if private people want to donate money that is their choice. (even if i disagree with it) Second, how are these students enrolling. Don't you have to have a visa. This is a publicly funded university. Why isn't the federal government and state not stopping this?
Answer 3 :
It is a private group. They are free to give money to anyone they want. So, do you want the State to dictate now to who we can give money too?
Answer 4 :
Anyone who knowingly helps an illegal alien in any way should be executed. Plain and simple.

Answer 9 :
I think that's great. $12 grand a year per student going into the university system in Arizona. That's money that's NOT going to La Raza or any other group. Does it exclude your children? Well, a case could be made that it's for ALL students who can't prove residency or are "undocumented". I believe it's illegal to discriminate based on nationality, so I think non-residents who go to ASU shoudl apply! Come on! Everyone jump in on the money bandwagon. Edited to say: I don't think it's great that illegal immigrants are attending our colleges. I think it's great that those who support illegal immigration are having to put their money where their mouth is. Given that these scholarships are for the "undocumented", I see no reason why EVERY student shouldn't apply for them and "lose" their documentation. Sure, I look and talk like I was born in Iowa - but I have no documention to show that I'm not qualified for this scholarship. They can't discriminate based on country of origin, so use our laws against them

It sounds interesting. I have a question though, what kind of shot is the doctors giving people? I mean to cause a lot of people to turn into zombies? It must be like a flu shot maybe? It has to be something for a lot of people to go to the doctor to get the shot in a two week period of time

A letter that needs to be checked.?
this is a letter im going to send to friends and family members, but i want to see if anyone sees any corrections, or has some advice on what to add. thanks! Dear __________, This summer I have decided to travel with Nancy Harmon and the Mighty Warriors, a program that help teach and develop students. The Mighty Warriors were first organized by Nancy Harmon in 1994 with six young people. There has been over one thousand young people travel in evangelism with Miss. Harmon over the past forty years. The Warriors come and develop quickly as they are given a platform on which to express their hearts and become anointed Teachers, Preachers, Youth Pastors, Worship Leaders, or whatever God has assigned them to do. I have prayed about it and feel that God’s plan involves me traveling with Nancy Harmon and the Mighty Warriors this summer. However, in order for me to travel with Miss. Harmon this summer I have to raise $1,700 by June ($700 of that must be turned in by the end of March.) So I am asking you to donate or pledge any amount of money you can to help me reach my goal of traveling with Miss. Nancy. Everything is appreciated; if you are not able to give any money I would appreciate prayers towards this goal. About Hotel near Tempe, AZ? see list

Hotel near Tempe, AZ? see list?
We need to travel to the Tempe area for a funeral and have several hotels from our points list picked out as possibles. Need a little local advice. Traveling as a couple with our 2 teens, staying in one room together for only one night. Our hotels to pick from are as follows: Hyatt Place - Tempe Holiday Inn & Suites - Phoenix Airport (I understand this is fairly new) Holiday Inn Express - Tempe Holiday Inn Express - Mesa/Chandler Crown Plaza Resort (San Marcos Golf resort) - Chandler We do not play golf and don't anticipate having a lot of time to explore the area between travel getting there, going to the funeral, meeting with family, etc. Just looking for a decent place to spend the night where we can use our points.

I live in Tempe, I travel often and know the area very well. My company has also booked many people in different hotels. The best by far is the Hyatt. What wins it over the others, is that its in a better area and closer to the main section of Tempe.
Answer 2 :
Inn suites in Tempe is very nice, reasonable rates and if you do get a minute next to a great mall and right off the freeway. We have done several "staycations" there

About Jeffrey Bernard is Unwell and Living in London

Jeffrey Bernard is Unwell and Living in London??????
And so was Joy Gresham (`Nobody wants to treat a Jewish lady`) and Sylvia Plath and Judy Garland and Mama Cass...And Ava Gardner. Even Raymond Chandler, another American...and a great, great one...died ignominiously and without medical attention looked after by locals in an Eaton Square basement flat. (poss the same one as I) Garland died of a heart attack; had obviously been to the local surgery and been told to `take an aspirin and ring me in the morning`; because neighbours recall seeing her and in some distress on the nite that she putatively committed suicide. Why the HELL doesn`t the richest country on earth have an American hospital in London and why the HELL don`t they make a big stink when the British treat Americans like scum in need of medical attention? Instead the Americans force us to travel half way around the world to attend a tribunal which ipso facto exonerates British negligence. Complicity? Who knows!

If you don't like it here, you could always go home. You don't HAVE to have medical insurance to get medical assistance in this country. But because of that, many people come here for free treatment, putting a burden on our resources. If all the freeloaders went home (or were charged before they were treated), our NHS might be in a better state than it is now

The House of Representatives authorized the governor to deploy the Arizona National Guard to the border, set aside $10 million to pay for it and toughened trespassing laws to crack down on day laborers. In the state Senate, lawmakers approved a Homeland Security Force that would be separate from the Arizona National Guard and free of any federal authority to commandeer it. Although envisioned as a local readiness force that could respond to anything from a flood to a bird-flu epidemic, it is widely viewed as a homegrown border patrol. advertisement Thursday's votes represent the halfway mark for the bills; House-approved bills now move to the Senate, and vice versa. The National Guard bill, House Bill 2766, reinforces the governor's existing power to deploy the National Guard in the event of an immigration-caused emergency. Its most controversial provision was a clause that stated the guard "does not need to retreat" - a direct response to an incident earlier this year in southeastern Arizona where a National Guard contingent from Tennessee withdrew from its post when a group of four armed men approached from the north. Rep. Warde Nichols, the bill's sponsor, said he felt it was necessary to emphasize that the guard, if operating under the governor's control, would not need to retreat. Democrats unsuccessfully pushed to have the phrase removed, saying the National Guard found the reference insulting. And, any offense aside, Democrats argued that the reference is unnecessary, since Guard members have a duty to defend and can fire if they feel their lives are endangered. The bill includes $10 million that the governor can use to pay for Guard costs. The bill passed on a 38-15 vote, with seven members not voting. Several Democrats voted for the measure, including Rep. Pete Rios, D-Hayden, who said he intended to hold Nichols to his statement that he would consider amending the bill in the Senate to remove the "retreat" language. The House also approved House Bill 2589, which would hike the penalties for trespassing in an attempt to discourage people from crowding street corners looking for work.

HAHAHAHA you're kidding me?! Do you actually think it is OK to expect a free meal just because it's your birthday? And on top of that, you're going to stiff the poor server his or her tip because you can't even afford to go out for a meal? Stay at home, or mooch off your family and friends.
